During the economic downturn email marketing may be essential for lead generation, it has been claimed.

According to web-based managed services firm AIS Media, the facility gives businesses the chance to better trace lead generation as well as providing them with cost-efficient results.

Furthermore, it also levels the playing field for small and medium-sized businesses, meaning it could be especially useful for those starting up in the UK.

Thomas Harpointner, chief executive of AIS Media, said: "Email allows companies to continue their marketing programs even during the worst of economic times in a way that allows them to trace lead generation and gives them a measured return on investment."

The Telegraph recently reported that despite the recession in the UK, there is still a healthy number of businesses starting up in the country, with no significant decline from last year's figures.

Firms looking to enter the UK market may want to consider using multiple sign-up forms to generate new business leads, it has been suggested.

StreamSend believes that by using this solution, companies can quickly set up and deploy several lead generation options with a range of field requirements.

The firm believes that "all companies can benefit from using sign-up forms" and they can help those using whitepapers or webinars to generate leads to manage incoming information effectively.

Dan Forootan, president and chief executive officer of StreamSend, said: "In today's tough economic climate, businesses are pushed to be more effective and efficient than ever before."

He added that using multiple sign-up forms could help businesses entering the UK market to "collect the qualified leads they need to grow their businesses".

Inside CRM recently claimed that using whitepapers is a popular method for generating leads, along with email campaigns, blog responses and webinars.

Marketers may be interested to hear the opinion of one expert who has given some advice about generating sales leads.

Writing for Customer Think, Mark Binns, co-founder and managing partner of Torque Customer Strategy, states that every business should actively invest in generating more leads.

He believes managers should consider campaigns to be an investment rather than an expense, especially during the economic downturn – a key time to get ahead while competitors are weak.

Mr Binns suggested that businesses "cut costs where needed, but don't cut investments that directly impact sales like lead generation.".

"In fact, I argue you should push harder than ever to generate leads," he added.

These can be as a result of telemarketing, email marketing or being searchable on the internet, he stated.

In related news, MarketingSherpa recently found that tight budgets mean marketers are having to get more out of their lead generation strategies.

Email has been identified as one of the marketing tactics which generates the highest number of leads at the lowest cost, according to new research.

A study conducted by MarketingSherpa revealed that a large percentage of marketers use this tactic compared to other methods.

However, this is not the only technique businesses should employ.

The website states: "Tactics, such as direct mail and telemarketing, are essential pieces of a well-rounded lead nurturing campaign."

It is claimed that some prospects respond better to this kind of marketing "and lead nurturing is all about connecting with the right prospect at the right time and in the right way".

In future, new platforms such as social networking sites and Web 2.0 channels could also be utilised by marketers looking to generate leads, according to Marketing Sherpa.

According to Cambridge Network, if businesses do want to take advantage of telemarketing, outsourcing their campaign means that a team of experts are providing the service.

Around 800 new businesses chose to start up in the UK in the third quarter of last year, new research has revealed.

According to Barclays Bank, this is better than the 600 new launches which were seen over the same period in 2007, the North West Evening Mail reports.

This news suggests that despite the recession, the UK is still regarded as an opportunity market for new start-ups.

Paul Titterton, regional director for Barclay's Local Business in the north-west, said: "Today's numbers reflect the confidence and faith entrepreneurs have in themselves and their business, even during this time of economic uncertainty."

In the north-west area of the country, 16,500 new firms were set up in the third quarter of the year, a 26 per cent increase compared to 2007.

Those establishing a business in the UK may want to take heed of advice from StreamSend, which recommends the use of multiple sign-up forms to generate new leads.

Those looking to start up a new business in the UK have been offered support from one company.

As part of a campaign called Get Started, Regus has announced £10 million worth of support for new enterprises.

This will include the chance for 50,000 new firms which are struggling with start-up costs to make free use of business office spaces.

The campaign is also backed by the British Chamber of Commerce and could spell good news for businesses looking to establish themselves in the UK market, as well as giving the British economy a boost.

Mark Dixon, chief executive officer of Regus, said it is vital that decisive action is taken now to "support people who want to set up their own business", as well as "getting small businesses moving again".

The North West Evening Mail recently reported on figures from Barclays Bank which show that the number of new business start-ups in the UK has increased compared to 2007.

Businesses who have just entered the UK market and are looking to generate new leads may be interested to hear about the success one firm had using direct telemarketing to complement its campaign.

Integrated marketing agency Anderson Skow began its strategy with a high-quality direct mail piece, an offer relevant to any new leads and a landing page, according to Kathi Skow, president of the Direct Marketing Awards Show.

These were then followed up with telemarketing as this became a 'door-opener' program for sales.

Ms Skow claims that the successful generation of leads using the campaign was due to using best practices in direct marketing tactics and including the sales teams in the list selection and telemarketing follow-up.

In related news, businesses were recently advised by Cambridge Network that outsourcing telemarketing campaigns is beneficial as it means a team of experts are working on the strategy.
